Mantis to market RMS St Helena ‘Getting to St Helena is part of the attraction; it is an adventure all in itself!’ With a contract signed with the beautiful island of St Helena earlier in the year to develop a 5-star hotel, Mantis has entered into another agreement to assist with the marketing of the RMS St Helena… the acclaimed and distinguished RMS St Helena. Mantis will not only assist with the marketing of the ship, but also bring its hospitality, education and conservation experience to the island with initiatives to develop skills in the community as well as support the natural environment. One of only two ocean-going vessels in the world to still carry the venerable title of Royal Mail Ship, RMS St Helena was built in 1989, specifically to supply the island of St Helena, a British Overseas Territory deep in the tropical South Atlantic. Mantis is proud to be associated with the RMS St Helena which in addition to being a working ship; she is also a passenger vessel, transporting her guests with style and service from days gone by on a journey to one of the most remote, inhabited islands in the world. The RMS as she is fondly called, is a 7 000 tonne passenger-cargo liner with air-conditioned en-suite cabins and has the ability to carry 155 passengers and 2 000 tonnes of cargo. It has a number of accommodation options to suit different needs, number of people and budgets. And thanks to the continuing popularity of the ship and to meet the demands of customers, a significant refurbishment has been in the works, which has resulted in seven new cabins on A & B Deck. There is also a new, fully air-conditioned, glass fronted gym, which offers a fantastic view of the ocean as you work out. Sharing its name, the island of St Helena is more than 2 000 kilometres from the nearest major landmass, and with its rich flora and fauna, the island certainly fits with Mantis’ mantra of ‘unearthing the exceptional’. “We’re extremely excited to be marketing this iconic Royal Mail Ship, one of only two left in the world, as part of our growing portfolio of boutique cruises worldwide,” commented Adrian Gardiner, chairman of Mantis. “This is the first of our exciting steps towards ultimately developing our very own boutique hotel on St Helena island.” St Helena is located 1 131km to the south east of Ascension Island and 1 931km from the West African coast. The island is small, with hills and contrasting landscapes thanks to its pastures, exotic trees and plantations of New Zealand flax, making it a beautiful destination for visitors. There are also about 20 endemic flowering plants and ferns, one indigenous land-based vertebrate, the Wire Bird, and 10 species of fish. The climate is also attractive thanks to its moderate temperatures with warm summers and cool winters. The only access to the island is by the RMS St Helena. The ship calls at the island approximately every three weeks and travels between the island, Cape Town, and Ascension Island. The RMS currently offers round-trip cruises from Cape Town to St Helena (situated 1 800km north west of Walvis Bay) and Ascension Islands. The ship cannot dock at St Helena and disembarkation is by small boats. St Helena also offers a host of scenic delights and adventures just waiting to be explored. Try your hand at the 699 steps of Jacob’s Ladder; a landmark of Jamestown, the island’s capital, the stairs were built in 1832 and stretch 274-metres high! Visit Napoleon’s last residence at Longwood House, now a museum, and see his final resting place in Sane Valley, before his body was returned to France in 1840. Discover St James’ Church, the oldest Anglican Church in the Southern Hemisphere, dating from 1774. Take in the views at Diana’s Peak National Park, which at 823-metres above sea level, is the island’s highest point. Enjoy romance at St Helena’s heart-shaped waterfall, an iconic landmark and don’t miss out on the dramatic High Knoll Fort, which takes you back to a bygone era where knights and fair ladies reigned. Be inspired by its dry moat, drawbridge and of course … the perfect view. For more information about Mantis, please visit mantiscollection
