Many Asian-American leaders have been extremely quiet as police brutality spreads throughout the country. Our own Assemblymember Rob Bonta, the first Filipino-American to be elected to the State Assembly, has a more-than-cozy relationship with the police unions, who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars getting him elected. While in the Alameda City Council, Bonta voted for the acquisition of an armored personnel carrier and has, at least so far, refused to carry any legislation which might anger police unions. Ultimately, the reason why police officers shoot - or beat - first, and dont even bother asking questions lately, is because they know they enjoy almost complete impunity for their acts. And they will continue to do so until state legislatures take away such codified impunity. The color of your skin should not determine which groups you care about, but its easier to look away when you feel that you could never be a victim. But it doenst matter what you look like, how innocent you are, if a cop decides he wants to beat you up, he will and chances are, hell get away with it. Until we all say enough is enough and change the law, until we stop electing officials who are nothing but puppets of police unions, situations like this will be more and more common.
