Many Hyderabad traffic cops suffer from hearing impairment HYDERABAD: A large number of citys traffic cops suffer from hearing impairment, often leading to irreparable hearing loss, reveals a recent survey. About 76% of the 150-odd traffic cops suffer from some degree of hearing impairment while many who have been in the profession for over four years showed almost irreparable hearing loss. Over eight hours of daily exposure to such high decibels has had an adverse impact on their hearing. We had approached the traffic department with the results of the survey. Unfortunately, no step towards addressing the issue has been taken, said Dr E C Vinaya Kumar, who led the study team and heads the cochlear implant clinic at Apollo Hospital. Andhra Pradesh which has been a pioneer of sorts in funding cochlear implants for the hearing impaired under the Aarogyasree scheme is in an unenviable position of having 6 per 1000 persons suffering from hearing loss, double than the national average. A cochlear implant surgery could cost anywhere between Rs 5 and Rs 10.5 lakh. In June this year, the age limit of children entitled to get implants under the Arogyasree scheme was reduced from 12 to 2 years.
