Many Newfoundlanders Involved In Persian Gulf Crisis By Bruce Roberts, The Downhomer Oct. 1990 Vol 3-N5 According to a CBC TV report, the crew of the three ships- the Terra Nova, the Protecture, and the Athabaskan - sent by Canada to the Persian Gulf is made up of more than 20% Newfoundlanders. Among them Wayne Finn of Mount Pearl, Dean Turpin of St Lawrence, Sheldon OBrien, Paul Carew, Michael Carew and Austin Collett all of Cape Broyle, Joe MacDonald of Campbells Creek, Tony Reid and Bruce Park, Both of Corner Brook, Ron Rideout of Fleur de Lys, George Foote Jr. and Paul Blackmore, both from Port aux Basques. As well, the Cygnus, the biggest cargo ship serving Newfoundland has been sent to the Middle East to serve the American Navy as a supply ship. Nearly half of that particular crew are Newfoundlanders. Among them is Charles Howse of St. Johns.
