Many a people are constantly on the lookout for jobs in high profile companies. Our higher institutions chunk out thousands of graduates yearly. Most of these graduates end up as endless job-seekers that search incessantly for job vacancies in national dailies, notice and bill boards as well as the Internet. We are aware today that almost a quarter of Nigerians are unemployed. The National Bureau of Statistics says 23.9% of Nigerians are unemployed! And unfortunately, many of them are young people! The situation becomes dastardly dangerous when you consider the massive influx of Nigerians in diaspora back into the country! I was in a discussion with the Managing Director of one of the multinational companies in Nigeria a few months ago. What he told me was shocking: many Nigerians (and other Africans) are returning home because there are no jobs in Europe and America. "And these guys come in with foreign degrees and massive confidence", he says! So, the competition is higher than you can imagine! And gladly the land is green. Nigeria is arable land with a wide array of diverse opportunities for those who can see. What’s the way out? Embrace entrepreneurship or get a job! For those who are keenly interested in getting a job, what can you do that will give you a competitive edge above others in job interviews? In the light of this seemingly endless struggle for survival, an age-long method has proven useful to be an effective way to get that dream job you really want. I have seen it work on several occasions. Do you want that vacancy fast? Then volunteer! Simple! Just volunteer! Volunteerism is the mainstay of community building and bedrock of national development. It is the biggest tool used by many non-governmental organizations to implement their programs. Whether you want to succeed as a social entrepreneur or a business guru, volunteerism, a form of apprenticeship, always helps! President Barack Obama profited enormously from the large number of volunteers he had during his campaign; some of them are now members of his cabinet! I have countless number of friends whose volunteer experience have landed them jobs; for others, it has expanded their networks and ultimately their net worth!
