Many boaters heading south through Georgia get impatient to finally reach Florida, and Fernandina Beach is the first stop in the Sunshine State. But one more stop in Georgia and little patience will bring you to one of the major highlights of the ICW. Cumberland Island at the Florida/Georgia border is accessible only by boat. From the mainland its a ferry boat ride away, but from your own boat, its simply a wonder. There is a very large anchorage area (page 57 & 58, TGBOA, Hampton Roads/Norfolk to Key West), and the National Park is easily accessible by dinghy at one of the docks nearby. Walk the beautiful tree lined paths, cross over to the dunes and sink you toes in the snow white sands, or visit the historical ruins and watch the wild horses roam the island. Your wont regret slowing down just a little.
