Many friends asked me what is the difference being writing a ghazal and poetry..Well there is no referential definition, but according to my experience, the differences are as follow:- 1> Ghazal has strict form, structure and grammar that we have to follow, whereas Poetry has open structure (we all know) except for few AABB ABAB or sonnet 2> Ghazal uses philosophical symbols (no simili & metaphors) where poetry uses imaginative symbols (metaphors, simimi and poetic objects) [Simple Example: Tum intaa kyun muskuraa rahe ho..Kyaa gum hai jo tum chhuppa rage ho...If this was to be expressed with poetry, it will be very different, we have to first choose simili to combine this two, identify correct subject and integrate them] 3> Ghazal has almost 70-80% philosophy and 20% imagination but in case of poetry its other way round..however poetry uses broad philosophy which cannot be expressed by philosophical symbols 4> Ghazals are down to earth and objective is always revealing, whereas poetry is superficial and objective is concealing...Thats why most romantic songs and sad songs uses shayri lyrics, where as situation based songs are written in poetic lyrics 5> In Ghazals (multiple stanzas Matla , asar] the subject can change, but philosophical themes remains the same, whereas in poetry it is other way round....
