Many friends keep inquiring as to when the Supreme Court of Georgia might render an opinion in GC/LOA appeal of the Superior Court bond denial. Although their attorneys continue to speculate on a time frame, unless one of them has an inside source (which they shouldnt), the decision date remains as originally promised - most likely within six months of oral arguments. All any of us can do is check the website each Friday afternoon for a list of pending opinions for the following week. It could come by the end of this month or it could be as late as April. In light of this potential delay, we have again agreed to postpone actions on the pending secondary lawsuit (over their attempted violations of previous court orders) - this time until April 15...after which, we will finally go back to Superior Court and delve into the political actions and details that lead up to the unfortunate position in which our county currently finds itself. Some also continue to speculate as to my motives and ask why I would be against their great and successful free school? To them I answer, Im not opposed to school choice or charter schools...if done fairly, equitably, and legally. While I applaud academic success, I also recognize the realities some would rather not mention. Ironically, those most upset with me for taking a conservative stand are not the ones we normally associate with having such a liberal sense of social entitlement. Instead, they are otherwise politically Republican conservatives who are all for governmental ethics, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. They are against attempted power-grabs and overreach, and political conflicts of interests. On a national level, they are opposed to the Pelosi/Reid/Obama tactics of achieving their desired objectives by any means necessary. My position is simple. We shouldnt have a double standard. If it isnt right when national Democrats do it, why it is it okay when local so-called Republicans do it? I dont have children or grandchildren in school and I dont have personal lake property values to concern me. I really have nothing personal to gain or lose. I simply see the situation though the eyes of a potential industry. The fact is, no major employer wants to come to a county which is in any way divided...socially, educationally, economically, or any other way. The long-range strategic plan for Greene County had best be one encompassing the best interest of all existing citizens. High-end residential retirement communities are a cash cow when it comes to economic impact. However, public investing in an alternative school for the purpose of attracting young families to one area of the county in the absence of industrial jobs, is an economic drain on public services. It does nothing to solve existing problems. It does nothing to revitalize existing communities. It does nothing to fix whats broken. Rather than turn our backs on our less fortunate children, our existing citizens, our existing communities, and their futures, as well as the bulk of our county...would it not be much better if we all rolled up our collective sleeves and worked to develop a slightly less grandiose plan which would be all-inclusive, fix whats broken, take care of our own, and revitalize our existing communities and business districts? Growth for the sake of growth makes no sense at all. Urban sprawl might be good for those only interested in capitalizing on real estate values. However, Ive yet to see a case where such residential growth solved all social ills and lowered taxes. What is our ultimate goal? Is it merely growth for the sake of growth?...or is it improving the quality of life for our existing citizens and creating an economic environment whereby our children and grandchildren will find their hometown a viable place to return and raise a family? We all have choices. Which shall we chose?
