Many know that t.A.T.u. began with the song “Yugoslavia” when a young Lena Katina recorded it under the direction of Ivan Shapovalov and Alexander Voitinsky. But, not many know that the song itself was meant for a boy to sing and that the lyrics acted as Voitinskys direct passage for the invasion of NATO troops in Yugoslavia in 1999. “…We shamefully abstained from participating in the war”, noting that he himself wanted to go to Yugoslavia, but was afraid of being killed. The point of the song, in his own words, is that “I was asking for forgiveness for being such a wimp”. The song has been performed live only 2 times - in 2012 when Lena once again began performing solo after t.A.T.u.’s falling out. A repeated interest in the song arose in 2014 during the situation in Donbass (Ukraine).
