Many may not have put together that football, and the economy, are either soulmates, or else bed buddies. The simple metaphor being that the organized effort to take land, is a rehearsal for our military, which also has economic motives as a core value. But the more general issue is the structural influence football has on society. Thus, the rising issues in the nfl, operating as an npo, wanting to potray itself as charitable or supportive element of a community (whether it is or not), or the ncaa, as the Northwestern case showed, being taken to task for exploiting the student athletes, are each interesting developments along the integrity line. But then there is the state playoff organizations, like the IHSA, (Illinois High School Athletics) cultivating the process of community compliance, through strategies that move education further from local voice and influence, and more into a state or national agenda. There is of course a reason that football plays on Sunday, as Americas church, and the socialization of the culture is a principle goal, with all sorts of supports for the sport being an effective tool for this end. Thus, the IHSA changing football seasonal and playoff structures from conferences, to regions, has attractive pragmatic elements that sell the concept, as well as structural elements that make it palitable, but there are also some very intentional social engineering designs in it as well.
