Many members of the community have asked as to why one of our ambulances was not on site yesterday Evening in Buchanan for the PMHS vs. James River game. EMS agencies in Virginia are heavily regulated under the Department of Health and the Virginia Office of EMS. Under the Department of Health, the state is divided into eleven regions which have their own protocols that providers and agencies must follow. Here in Rockbridge County, we fall under the Central Shenandoah EMS Council Region, while Boutetourt County is in the Western Virginia EMS Council Region. As a licensed ALS transport agency within the CSEMS region, Buena Vista Rescue Squad operates under the license of an Operational Medical Director. This allows our providers to provide care at their trained level only within the Council Region. Simply put we cannot cross jurisdictional lines into another region of the state unless mutual aid is requested by that locality, or to transport a patient, if needed, to an appropriate level facility such as Roanoke Memorial, or Lynchburg General. While the Virginia High School League does not have a set regulation requiring ambulances to be on standby at football games, Buena Vista Rescue Squad is and always will have Ambulance coverage for all home Parry McCluer Football games and any away contest that may be inside our EMS Council Region.
