Many metropolitan areas in the U.S. show a considerable gap in the graduation rates between their urban schools and those in surrounding suburbs. Researchers found, for example, that in Ohio nearly 83% of public high school students in suburban Columbus graduated, while 78.1% in suburban Cleveland earned their diplomas, which is well above their local city schools’ average of 59% (ode.state.oh.us, 2010). Meta-analysis on these statistics reveals that a large number of students who fail to complete high school in urban schools never manage to acquire college preparedness or participate in advanced training programs (Lee, Cornell, Gregory, & Xitao, 2011). Students in these urban districts are significant, disproportionate risks of dropping out of school due to the lack of support high schools receive for developing the necessary skills that students require to become competitive in today’s economy (Jan, & Watson, 2011).
