Many modern homes have open-plan living areas that extend from the kitchen, through the lounge and onto the patio. While this ensures a flow of light and air, it can make decorating a challenge. Here are three tips to bear in mind when decorating your open-plan living area… 1. Stick to a style To ensure a harmonious visual flow, stick to a similar style of furniture throughout the open-plan living area. For example, if you have a modern glossed white dining room table, your kitchen and lounge should echo this slick, modern aesthetic. Think white, washable slip-covers for sofas and graphic black and white scatter cushions in the lounge. In the kitchen, you could add a modern contrast to white cabinets with black counter tops. 2. Create cosy zones To create cosy area within an open plan space, group furniture into zones using certain pieces to frame it. For example, an open back book case could be used as a visual divider between the dining area and the lounge. Place a few choice books, vases and wine glasses on the book case and you’ll still ensure a flow of natural light through the backless bookcase. 3. Consider size and proportions Choose furniture in proportion to the space. For example, if it’s a large area you could go for chunky, oversized sofas. In a small apartment consider slick, modern armless sofas that either have a low profile, making the ceiling seem even higher, or legs as they encourage a flow of light. Before you buy anything, measure it and plot those measurements in your home or on a scaled floor plan. Remember, what might look perfect on an enormous showroom floor could be too big for your open-plan living space. http//all4women.co.za
