Many of Eastons finest works are by their nature temporal, fleeting experiences. The discerning critic may observe a piece of high end site-specific contemporary sculpture one day, only to find that it has been taken away by the council the next. Yet this Chelsea Park Road enclosure offers a rare semi-permanent space in which anonymous local artists may dabble in projects which are evolving, morphing, transcending. These pictures were taken first in May and again this week, and offer a fascinating insight into the working methods and practices of Eastons creators. The May garden is a Zen-like reflection on the spaces between things, the optimism of the season reflected in the area of new foliage, symbolising the optimism of a new season. An empty pavilion is pregnant with possibility, perhaps awaiting a performance. The tyre seems to represent the circle of life, and the television is a rejection of popular culture - it is both literally and metaphorically out of action. Overall, it is an inviting space which seems to invite interaction; and by mid July it has achieved its aims. It is a thriving community artspace where creative self expression has truly taken hold. Look carefully and stacked timber seems to be awaiting some grand immolation. Carpets (magic?) have been added, and plastic bags carefully placed alongside part empty vessels which surely are awaiting some further decorative embellishment. What lies within them? By inviting collective participation, the space seems to be challenging the bourgouis concepts of ownership and the limiting definitions of traditional horticultural aesthetics. And asking what next? As seasons must surely change, the space buzzes with anticipation. One can only guess at its next transormation. Poolside playspace with watersides Dougall Oogle? Winter wonderland? Ice palace? Certainly a charming addition for the eventual new owners of this plot who must surely be delighted at having such art work add value to their property.
