Many of the details in the Torture Report have been publicly - TopicsExpress

Many of the details in the Torture Report have been publicly available for years, but its still, for me at least, dumbfounding and appalling to have the extent of the details assembled all at once. The three below articles make up a decent overview. In a documentary class I taught a few years ago, I showed Alex Gibneys Taxi to the Dark Side. At the end of the term, I asked the students which of the docs from the class they liked, and which they didnt. One student said he wished I hadnt shown Taxi. I understood that visceral reaction, but in the back of my mind I thought: But that was the one we most crucially needed to see. I dont mean that in a punitive way – I have no desire to smear any students nose in the awfulness of the news. It just seemed crucial in the way it breaks down how states operate, the uses they find for sadists and liars, and the way they weave policy from the fabric of plausible deniability. nytimes/2014/12/10/world/senate-intelligence-committee-cia-torture-report.html?_r=0 nytimes/interactive/2014/12/09/world/cia-torture-report-key-points.html nytimes/interactive/2014/12/08/world/does-torture-work-the-cias-claims-and-what-the-committee-found.html
