Many of the pastors have already seen this, but for the lay leaders who may not have seen it I will share it here. Dear Friends of Luther Seminary, With all thanks to God, I am pleased to announce that the Luther Seminary Board of Directors has elected the Rev. Dr. Robin J. Steinke to be the seminary’s next president. We are thrilled to have found the right person to lead Luther Seminary into the future. Let me introduce you to Robin Steinke. She has a deep love for God, the church and the world. She is energetic, warm, direct, engaging and passionate about sharing the gospel. She uses her strong leadership gifts in a multitude of ways. Dr. Steinke is currently the dean of the seminary and professor of theological ethics and public life at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, where she has served for 15 years. She previously served as an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) pastor; a training manager and financial planner at American Express Financial Advisors; and a middle school band director in Marietta, Ga. Robin is a graduate of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. She holds a Master of Divinity and a Master of Sacred Theology from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in England. Robin also serves on a number of important church and academic initiatives. I invite you to learn more by reading today’s press release. Luther Seminary’s board of directors, board of trustees and presidential search committee strongly agree that Robin has all the characteristics and qualifications necessary to be our next president. She is a woman of high integrity, she is an experienced senior leader and she is highly collaborative and effective at building strong, productive relationships. She has a strong financial background and has demonstrated success in fundraising and other financial strategies. She is firmly committed to academic quality, ministry and mission. And, she is a forward-thinking strategic leader who will guide and challenge Luther Seminary as we continue to deliver on our mission of educating leaders for Christian communities. As Robin prepares to join us June 1, we also say a very special thank you to the Rev. Rick Foss, interim president. Rick stepped into the position in December 2012 during a very stressful time. Under his leadership, Luther Seminary has achieved a major financial turnaround: the seminary will have a positive cash flow this year for the first time in many years. As Rick said, “We can credit this amazing result to two things—we’ve managed expenses far better and you, our donors, have responded by giving generously.” I want to add a third reason: Rick’s outstanding leadership! Finally, thanks to all of you. You are an amazing group of donors, alumni and friends. You have stood with us both in good times and in uncertain times. You continue to believe in Luther Seminary and our mission to the church. We appreciate your unending prayers, encouraging and thoughtful emails, continued generous support and commitment to the work that God has entrusted to us. As we anticipate the arrival of our new president, we know we face significant challenges. So much is changing—the world, the culture, the church and theological education. And yet, we are called to equip God’s servants to share the gospel, no matter what the situation is. With the help of President Steinke, faculty, staff and students are committed to fulfilling our sacred call. Thank you for joining us in this exciting endeavor. Sincerely, Pastor Jim Lindus Chair, Luther Seminary Board of Directors
