Many of the things being taught today is nothing more than just beating against the wind or shadow boxing and the sad thing is that the shadow is winning the fight because all we are doing is getting exhausted and frustrated. Paul makes it clear that we must learn to discipline our own body and bring it into subjection, lest after we preach to others we become disqualified. This is found in 1st Corinthians 9:26-27 which really is dealing with a leader’s inability to over come; his/her own bodily passions or impulses that would disqualify them from preaching and leading the church. The only way people are going to learn to over come their passions and bodily impulses is to see their leaders walking in discipline which is a term meaning to hit under the eye. In other words we must be able to knock out those bodily impulses which would keep us from winning the lost and bringing them to maturity in Christ. Paul’s point is that if a leader lacks the ability to do this he/she is not qualified to lead. If it’s not working for the leader, how will they be able to convince someone else it will work for them? This is the Biblical pattern first we see it taught and demonstrated in scripture, then in the lives of our leaders, then in lives of the followers, and then their lives become the lights to them that are in darkness.
