Many of the usual lines about the mess of higher ed labor, but this ones about Canada. Some people, who probably wouldnt listen to this story and who probably make enough money for some kind of suburban paradise, just shake their heads muttering something about wanting to be a professor, live a life of the mind . . . thats what you get in America. Well, from my experience public university was the best place I could find to be a person. Nowhere else really allowed me to be creative and cultivate historical understanding. So the idea that I could have just been an engineer, salesman, or soldier instead of a lowly grad student/struggling writer profoundly contradicts my life experience. Its not much, but its the best I can do. What really troubles me is an inability to see success: a double bind. If I work on my degree, I get closer to the adjunct trap. If I give it up for low pay in the retail/service industry economy, I have failed my dream. What would you do?
