“Many of us are so well wired to pick up proper social behavior intuitively, we have overlooked those who don’t and need explicit training in social interactions and have viewed them as just misbehaving”. Rosen, W and Bartak, J. (2002). Skills of Social-Emotional Competence are critical in a child’s lifespan development and functioning. They are as vital, if not more so, than academic, athletic, or artistic skills developed throughout life. Yet for many children, including those with sensory issues, these competencies are underdeveloped -- or lacking. Skills of Social-Emotional Competence include: · Awareness of own emotional state(s) and social cues · Awareness of other’s emotional state(s) and social cues · Self-regulation skills · Reciprocal play skills · Appropriate emotive verbalization skills · Ability to cope with stressors · Responding to others’ emotive reactions A failure to attain these skill sets can create social and adaptive barriers for young children. Negative consequences such as social rejection, reduced self-esteem, and cognitive deficits can occur and cause difficulties. Sensory issues often create barriers for children to develop socially and they need explicit, step-by-step SUPPORT WITH social interactions. It is not unusual for others to describe these kids as anti-social, “defiant,” “naughty,” or “difficult,” when in truth, they just need social skill training. This is why Sensory Kids is introducing Sensational Social & Sensory Groups! Our goal is to help children of all ages and levels of functioning to acquire the social skills and competencies they need for life through experiential, therapist-facilitated group work and orchestrated socialization experiences. Once they can get a grasp of how to use these new skills, they can then generalize them to home, school and recreational settings. Our sensitive, trained psychotherapists and occupational therapists will work with children to improve social competency. This can be accomplished through the following techniques (as appropriate based on childs age and functioning): * Sensory warm-ups and grounding techniques * Facilitated play therapy in a sensory supportive environment * Small group and 1-1 guidance allowing individualized sensory needs to be recognized improving emotional regulation * Modeling and role-play * Peer review and feedback sessions * Mirroring activities * Social script development We are offering a 6 weeks group for both younger and older children beginning the week of November 11th. Please email us at sensorykids@gmail if you are interested so we can group and schedule accordingly!!!
