Many of you already know there was a home invasion in our area - TopicsExpress

Many of you already know there was a home invasion in our area this past weekend. Home invasions are not exactly what you would call rare occurrences in our area or throughout America nowadays. Being keenly aware it can happen to any of us at any time, I admit I live a bit more on edge having a bit of subconscious anxiety, never being completely off guard. I suppose in my case, I may be more conscious of the reality than most, having already lived through a near death business invasion of sorts. Many have called or sent private messages wanting to know what all the after dark commotion, police and blue light activity was around and behind the red barn this weekend. Some have even said the scanner reported a shootout where shots were heard in a pop, pop, pop, fashion. While that is partially true it is not entirely true. The clock was approaching 11:00 P.M. It seemed to be darker than usual, misting rain and getting foggy outside. I was about to turn in for the night already wearing nothing but my underwear, when suddenly my phone rang. Knowing calls which come late at night are never good, I answered it immediately. It was my son, Jay who lives sort of to the side and behind me. In a very frantic voice he said, Come Quickly. I am surrounded by people! There was no time to ask for details. I did exactly what I always do when there is an obvious threat against myself, my friends, or my family. I took up arms. In this case I grabbed my 44 magnum which is never more than arms reach away. Ironically the same weapon which had saved my life at least once before. As I flew out the door, barefooted and scantly clad, Debbie moved to her predetermined position close enough to take up her own arms if necessary. (in case you dont, every family and household should have a home invasion or robbery plan.) In the brief moments as I was running full blast faster than a 19 year old, in the dark and misting rain, before I came face to face with what I believed to be an obvious threat to my safety and my familys safety, many thoughts ran through my mind. I knew that Jay lived on very private and isolated property nearly 1/4 mile off the main road. I also knew any group of people, outside his home in the misting rain, at an hour approaching midnight could not possibly be up to anything good. With that being said, one should know, although I am very reactive, I always remain very composed. Staying composed is exactly how I survived the previous thug attack at the shop. My plan was to take a short cut, and run through the patch of woods which separated my house and Jays. All the while staying completely composed. Well, so much for composed. As I was about to run into the dark woods, a group of people were running out of the woods. For a moment we were like a bunch of deer in each others headlights. We were running full blast right toward each other. As I said it was dark, foggy and misting rain. I could only see silhouettes of people with some wearing light clothing reflecting in the dim moon light. I yelled frantically, STOP! STOP! STOP! to no avail. As they continued to run full blast in my direction I knew there was no time for an interview. What else was there left to do? I raised my 44 magnum, high above my head and fired a warning shot. The muzzle blast was deafening. It worked. The group turned, went down around behind the barn and into the highway. Rather than giving chase which was my first instinct, I continued on my way to Jays house in order to be sure he had not been harmed. As I approached, I saw him looking out his bedroom window, rifle in hand. Thank God he was safe. I also saw two vehicles, within feet of his bedroom window. The keys were still in both and their engines were still running. I snatched the keys out of both in order to prevent the escape of any which might still be hiding in the woods. Both Debbie and Jay had already called 911. The response from the Dallas County Sheriff department was phenomenal. I am very thankful and appreciative for that. Because there was a report of shots fired, they sent the whole posse. It did not take long to round up those which had fled in the dark. What was their story? Why had they gone nearly a 1/4 mile off the main road, in the rain at an hour approaching midnight, onto private property, behind the red barn, stopped, got out of their vehicles and accumulated within feet of Jays bedroom window? If you say it would not have scared the daylights out of you too, then I say you might want to get your pulse checked. Their lack of good judgement and irresponsibility still puzzles me. What had happened? Why were they there? Well, as it turns out it was entirely innocent. One lone vehicle had made a wrong turn, gone down a 1/4 mile long driveway, realized they were at the wrong house, and innocently tried to turn around. As their luck would have it they got stuck right outside Jays bedroom window. He had been asleep and never realized they were there. Instead of politely knocking on Jays door and saying, I am stuck in your yard, they used their cell phone to call for help. Instead of one person coming they brought a large group. Jay was awakened by all the commotion, looked outside and saw a large group of people, in the rain close to his vehicle and very close to his bedroom window. Thinking, rightfully so, he was being robbed, burglarized, or invaded, he yelled out the window, Get Down! Get Down! GET Down! If you do not want to get shot! Instead of hanging around and explaining, they all fled into the nearby woods. Right into the muzzle blast of my 44 magnum. Admittedly I still tremble a bit when I think about it. Again I thank God all ended well and no one was killed or injured. If you do not have a plan to protect yourself and your family against robbery, burglary, or home invasion, I encourage you to get one now. Sooner or later you are gonna need it! In the end we did exactly what we would have done in the first place, if only they had simply knocked on the door. We took our chain and our 4 wheel drive and pulled them out of the muck. We all shook hands, thanked God we were all alive and went our separate ways. We will not even ask them to fix the damage to Jays yard.
