**********Many of you have called expressing concern in the news broadcast with Jim Strickland on the safety of the Heartwom and Flea prevention product Trifexis. I will post the statement from Elanco (the manufacturer) in regards to the broadcast but we do want to state that we have had no issues with Trifexis and will continue to give it to our own pets (The doctors and staff) and sell it in the hospital. As mentioned we still believe this is a very good combination product with a very good efficacy. ************************* Trifexis* has been rigorously tested and approved as safe by the US FDA, The European Medicines Agenvy and many other countries aroun the world to kill fleas and prevent infestation, to treat and control intestinal parasites and to prevent heartworm disease. The America Heartworm Society estimates more than 1 million dogs in our country have heartworm disease, a difficult to treat and potentially fatal disease. In the US alone more than 50 million doses of Trifexis have been dispensed and 15,000 veterinary clinics rely on the product, which gives elanco confidence in the safety and efficacy of Trifexis. Since the product came to market in Jan 2011, all reported potential adverse events have been reported to the FDA and appropriately investigated. There is no link established between product use and death. We take the safety of our products very seriously and thoroughly investigate potential concerns related to product use, including the cases explored by WSB-TV. In the instance of the 3 littermate puppies, the investigation is ongoing, but based on the information we have received , there are multiple other factors associated with the unfortunate death of these puppies. Specifically, via necropsy, all were diagnosed with myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. It is noteworthy that with 50 million doses dispensed in the US alone, there have been no breed-specific trends or patterns with a similar familial type response as seen in this case. In the older dog, the pets medical history suggests the probability of conditions that were present even before the dogs first dose of trifexis, including a potential mass in the animals lungs suggested by x ray, unfortunately, there was no necropsy conducted to determine what the mass was and cause of death. These data suggest it is unlikely that Trifexis was the cause. Further, the attending veterinarians have indicated other factors were involved. We will continue to work with the attending veterinarian and also have elected to consult with third-party experts for further confirmation. If you suspect an adverse reaction in your dog, please contact us at (888) 545-5973 ,Elanco *Please feel free to call us at the clinic if you have concerns regarding your pet and the use of Trifexis. *
