Many of you have heard this morning that Crumbs Bakeshop has - TopicsExpress

Many of you have heard this morning that Crumbs Bakeshop has closed the doors of more than 48 stores in 10 states. As a fellow member of the cupcake community, my heart aches for them. There is no greater loss to a business than to realize your dream is over and have to grieve it publicly! There are varying statements about the closure and whether it was done correctly - its not my place to argue that. But every single day - every day - people ask me to open new locations. How fun is that?! But 2014 has been a year of growth for Scratch in ways beyond the storefronts. Were growing as a team, as leaders, as a family - growing as a small business who is still learning how to not be so small. We are committed to doing Scratch well...not just doing it. Growth for the sake of growth is just ridiculous. This - this Crumbs closure - is why weve slowed down. Its scary to watch a business close - especially a business very much like my own! Cupcakeries are opening so quickly in Iowa its comical. We have been very careful from the beginning. So much research goes into this business. Its all very exciting and there are so many possibilities, but its not new or unique anymore. When we opened, there were less than three cupcake bakeries in the entire state…now there are dozens and dozens (and dozens). But what we LOVE are the people we meet - the places we travel - the communities were welcomed into. Our storefronts and the communities we have settled into will always be our homes. We live and breathe those people. We thrive on those spaces and dive into giving back to those towns. Its so important. Opening 50 locations? Not in the cards…ever. Because watching this happen to Crumbs, and very likely others soon after is just painful…and not a sound business decision for Scratch. Thank you for being such loyal customers. You continue to shop local and support us in big ways. That support keeps local businesses like ours open long after big businesses close, and were so grateful. Support your local mom & pop shops, your local farmers, your local grocers…you really are making a difference! We love making you smile!! Natalie
