Many of you, like myself, are having to travel these next few days. While its delightful to be able to join family and friends for Christmas, these trips can sometimes be a bit stressful and present holiday travelers with special, and sometimes unexpected, challenges. If your Christmas commute is on the highway this year, maybe you dont have to be reminded to click on seat belts, but do make sure your passengers comply with the captains orders for seat belts and shoulder harnesses. That includes back seat passengers! Its such a simple act that does save lives. Maybe you can leave an hour earlier than planned for your road trip? It would temper the pace and give some cushion for the unexpected delays. Whats the worse thing to come out of leaving early? Getting there early? More time for those bathroom and meal breaks? There is no real downside to getting ahead of schedule. The whiners who wanted to stay in bed another hour will just have to tough out a nap in the vehicle. That could be an added bonus for parents :-) If you are traveling by air, there can and will be some heartache for many due to the weather. Do me a favor, remind those you have influence over that the people working at the airports do not have any control over the weather. Not the airline service agents, the gate attendants, the flight attendants, and (believe it or not) neither do the pilots have any control over the weather. They are all there to help you get to where you are going SAFELY! And if the weather prevents s safe operation, you want your group to be thankful that those folks at the airport make the call to not let that flight go just yet. And if you get delayed, of course your family will want the airline folks to help reroute you. And you want them to treat your case with a sense of urgency and a dose of empathy. But remind your group that there are many other cases like yours that also need handling. And dont forget, the people that are helping you would much rather be with their friends and family than working during the holidays to get everybody else to grandmothers house. And finally, without creating a culture of worry warts, we all need to step up our game with respect to things that some of us have perhaps not put much emphasis on in the past. Have you noticed a piece of luggage out of place or without an obvious owner? Have you witnessed some suspicious or disturbing behavior. Its not just an announcement you should ignore when you hear these or similar questions from the PA. We live in a different time. It is not for us to decide if we should report something that seems out of place or not. We should indeed report it and let the proper authorities do their job. So, just go talk to that nice gate agent calmly, and quietly give them your observation. Its a responsibility for all of us these days. Safe travels my friends.
