Many of you still have questions about EV-D68. CLICK this link and WATCH the story I put together, after talking to state and local health experts, about the mysterious respiratory virus. Oklahoma has asked the CDC for help investigating whether the virus that has put kids in the hospital recently is one strain of Enterovirus. Although its been on doctors radar for two decades, there has never been a widespread outbreak. It may have already peaked in Tulsa. More children were hospitalized with respiratory illness here two weeks ago. Also, it does not appear to have been as serious here, as it did not send children to the ICU. Its much like a bad cold, and Enteroviruses are more common in summer and fall. Your child can have a runny nose, congestion, mild fever, scratchy throat and cough. It becomes more serious when they suddenly have trouble breathing. It can present as sudden or first-time asthma symptoms. There is no treatment for EV-D68. It runs its course and usually is not fatal. Many of you have told me about your childs symptoms and asked if they have EV-D68. Im not a doctor! I dont know! I will tell you this, if your child has cold symptoms, then suddenly starts wheezing, take him to the doctor. I hope watching my story clears up any confusion or panic. Ill keep tracking this virus for you, and let you know, when the state health department hears back from the CDC about whether there are confirmed cases of EV-D68 in Oklahoma.
