Many of you will be familiar with Sthembiso, a six year old who was brought to Project Gateway some 15 years ago when there was no one left to care for him. Sthembiso struggled at school, but against the odds, leaped two years at primary school, and finished his primary school education as a Prefect. He transferred to High School, where by the end of Grade 10 was top of his year group! Sthembiso ended up graduating from High School as “DUX” of the school! (for all you budding etymologists, ‘Dux’ is Latin for ‘Leader’, and means that Sthembiso graduated as the top academic student in the school! Very recently, Sthembiso was given an opportunity to spend a year as an IVEP (International Volunteer Exchange Programme) participant with the Mennonite Central Committee. Sithembiso is currently at orientation in Akron Pennsylvania, USA and will be flying to Winnipeg Canada on August 27 to begin his placement as an IT assistant with MCC Canada. Go Sthem!
