Many people are hating on this writer and he deserves it because this is pretty crappy shock jock writing. Moreover, hes a classic Wesleyan Jazz Musician in that he came, farted through a couple of classes with great teachers, probably didnt practice at all, and decided (likely ahead of time) that he didnt like jazz (worse, his article makes it clear that he actually cannot hear a melody, just words). But my take on that has always been, no big deal, just figure out what you do like and work hard at something, and the good students always do. It doesnt have to be jazz. His takedown of jazz writ large is pretty lame, but can all my friends who wasted no time ripping him to shreds perhaps stop and admit that some of it hurts most because its true. Im a lifelong jazz fan and on some level musician, and there is a lot of jazz I find unlistenable these days. Theres a fissure between the jazz that moved dancers and listeners in the genres heyday and the chin-scratching stuff that draws 90% male audiences and is at the heart of university programs that spew out 20-somethings with $200,000 degrees these days. Lou Donalson has been saying the same stuff for decades. Coltrane walked the bar with his horn before he raised it. This D-bag is not entirely wrong, and thats why this article is so hurtful. Hes still pretty despicable for his tone though.
