Many people are incapable of arriving at a moral judgement without thinking less of the person they see as judged, or thinking more of themselves in relation to this person. This is the standard thinking of worldly culture today, particularly our own. But it is profoundly immature and unwise thinking. To think that arriving at a moral conclusion necessarily involves a denigration of persons is in fact childish thinking. Think about it: when a child is first punished by a parent for some wrong act, many assume, at first, that their parents have rejected them personally, rather than just their actions. Is this not the EXACT kind of thinking we see every single day in the media and pop culture? It is. Childish thinking has become very popular, widespread, and insidious. But the Gospel tells a different story, of a God who, while still hating sin, loved His creation so much as to provide a way for their redemption in spite of their sin, and at His own expense. This is part of the deep and profound wisdom and mystery of the Gospel that is stunningly relevant to our contemporary world, and I am firmly convinced that this will be the means by which Christians can restore through personal and communal incarnation the pure and true example of moral knowledge and discernment which the Gospel exhibits to us. But we have to be willing to do so, and living among fellow Christians where moral accountability and familial love and affection are not at odds with one another, but two sides of the same coin, is difficult. But the fruit that comes therefrom is sweet, plentiful, and redeeming.
