Many people do not realize that John Wesley grew in his understanding of God. Wesleys theological understandings can be broken typically into early Wesley, middle Wesley, and late Wesley. This truth should do several things for us: 1) Help each of us understand that we are on a journey with God 2) Give us confidence in our own personal growth. 3) Consider which part of Wesleys life we are looking at when we are developing our own understanding of theology. A great example is his understanding of faith. Early Wesley viewed faith typically as an assent to truth claims. Middle Wesley looked to faith as trust in Gods love. Late Wesley saw faith as an actual experience of Gods love. There is truth in all his views but one can see that Wesley grew in understanding and relationship with God over time. We can also see what should be of greater importance regarding faith - an actual experience of Gods love.
