Many people have expressed concern for the Discovery Center and the residents of The Dalles. The Discovery Center is OPEN, after having been closed this morning due to the 2600+ acre Rowena wildfire. We are extremely fortunate to have a top-notch fire-fighting team in this area who have been battling the wildfire for the past two days in 30-35 mph winds. We are REALLY lucky to have the Siri & Sons organic farm across the road, which is down to bare dirt because they are in a replanting phase, and next to them the heavily watered The Dalles Country Club golf course. They provided a natural fire break last night. Still lots of smoke and helicopters flying overhead to deliver buckets of water and fire retardant to the hot spots, but the Discovery Center is still here!
