Many people hoped that the end of the Cold War would lead to a more peaceful world. Instead, the ideological conflict between capitalism and communism has been replaced with an upsurge in conflict between ethnic and national groups. Throughout the world, minorities and majorities clash over such issues as language rights, federalism and regional autonomy, political representation, religious freedom, education curriculum, land claims, immigration and naturalisation policy, even national symbols such as the choice of national anthem or public holidays.
