Many people look at opal as one of the most fragile and delicate gemstones on the market. While opal is fragile, it is more towards the middle of the pack in toughness and hardness. Many gemstones will break or chip when the least bit of pressure is applied, not all are lick diamond ruby and sapphire! Opal is also very susceptible to what is called thermal shock. Thermal shock occurs when the gemstone goes from extreme heat to cold or vice versa, such as dipping in cold water and cleaning it with a steam cleaner. This can cause color to fade or in extreme cases, the stone to chip or even shatter.
