Many people not realise the fun and satisfaction from helping at the Camira release cage. If you dont go, youll never know. Every offer is welcome, even if only for one shift. Week-day workers could offer a weekend shift. If we get enough offers, we may all only be needed once/fortnight instead of 5 times a week as some are doing. The load will ease as the heat stress babies eat fruit better and the pieces will soon be cut bigger. Cutting 65 kg of fruit into small pieces daily for the current 300 is a huge task. After the first release in less than 2 weeks, there will be several releases in 2-week blocks. Support feeding outside the cage will continue for another 2 or 3 months depending on available native food, but that involves only apple in reducing quantities so less helpers can manage. Now is the time when help is really needed but you will also get lots in return. Friendships are formed chatting over the cutting boards and you will learn how the process works and probably also about other interesting things. Morning: Both jobs take about half an hour. You can go at any time convenient to you after 6.30 am though working in with the other helper is best. (1) The most urgent need is for a vaccinated person to take down the feed trays and fruit hooks and put them outside, lightly rake the cage for dropped food, sieve the sand where its been raked, take the food scraps to the compost bins at the back of the cage, and put the filled water bottles back inside. (2) A second person who does not need to be vaccinated hoses the feed trays then washes them in big tubs, puts them on the drying rack and cleans and fills the water bottles. Afternoon: At the moment 3 or 4 people are needed from 3 pm to 5 pm. The amount of fruit to be cut is written on the white board. High protein powder is gently mixed in and the big buckets are taken to the cages where the fruit is ladelled into multiple feed trays. There are also kebabs to be made up with larger pieces of fuit and drip bottles filled. Vaccinated people hang fruit in the cages while others wash the cutting boards and knives and do a general tidy-up. The new cutting table is a good height to work and avoids sore backs. You dont need to bring anything and there are coffee and tea facilities with both indoor and outdoor tables for a break. We all know the saying, Many hands make light work is true.
