Many people probably saw this news last week, but just in case... New living wall has been built in Mill Woods - a 100-metre-long section along 91 Street between Mill Woods Road (approx 38 ave) and Whitemud Dr. It is the first one of its kind in western Canada! It’s constructed with a simple timber frame lined with geotextile fabric. Willow shoots are woven into both sides of the frame and then a mixture of soil and Edmonton compost will be blown in to fill the frame inside. The willow shoots will stay dormant all winter. Come spring, a curtain of bright green will start at the middle and eventually tower three metres high. Benefits of a living wall: ~ Every 100 metres of wall takes two tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the air each year and saves the production of tonnes of concrete ~ Easier to build, requiring only a mini-excavator, compared to the multiple pieces of heavy machinery required for a long concrete wall. ~ It costs between $800 and $900 per metre to build, compare to between $1,000 and $1,200 per metre for a concrete wall. ~ The sound dampening is superior. Where sound rebounds off a concrete wall, the sound is absorbed by the heavy soil core in the living wall. ~ Graffiti-resistant ~ Salt resistant ~ Beautifies the neighbourhood. edmontonjournal/news/edmonton/Living+walls+could+replace+concrete+sound+barriers/10336366/story.html More info: edmonton.ca/for_residents/flooding_sewers/living-wall.aspx
