Many people that I know who are near my age and older, used to be Republicans. They were Republicans back when Eisenhower and Goldwater were leading the party. Those are the ideals they held back then and the ideals they hold now. Interestingly enough, most of those people are now Democrats. They may not truly care for everything the Democrats stand for, but they know the Democrats are a lot closer than the Republicans are today. Small non-intrusive government, fiscal responsibility, and slow social progress that allows people to adapt to the changes. They were for the middle class and cared about the poor and needy. The recognized the need to motivate businesses to reinvest their earnings and were perfectly willing to use a highly progressive tax structure to do it. We experienced unprecedented growth during those decades after WWI, with high marginal tax rates, increasing money to help the poor and needy and a willingness to let the rich pay their fair share so no one went hungry. What happened to our old Republican party, where did it go wrong?
