Many private schools hike fees, violate MOE rules Sat, 22 Jun 2013 08:05:24 AST Saudi Gazette | Muhammad Al-Zahrani Okaz/Saudi Gazette TAIF – A number of private schools have raised their tuition fees by 45% to 100% for the next academic year in complete violation of the regulations of the Ministry of Education. A source told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that these schools had submitted applications to the ministry to get approval for fee increase but their applications were rejected because they failed to meet the ministry’s criteria. Despite the rejection of their applications, these schools decided to increase tuition fees. These are flagrant violations of the private school regulations, which were previously approved by the Shoura Council. The regulations stipulate that all private schools wishing to increase tuition fees should submit application to the ministry four months in advance and should meet all pertinent criteria to get their applications approved. The ministry has promised that it will impose strict penalties on the schools that have violated its regulations. It said that it received an avalanche of applications for fee increase and allowed only 110 private schools to increase their fees because they met all criteria. The committees in charge of processing the applications for tuition fee increase took into consideration the cost of education, school efficiency, educational achievements, results of students on tests conducted by the ministry, and schools’ success in Saudizing educational and administrative posts. The ministry urged schools whose applications were rejected to submit a review letter within 15 days of the decision, the source said. On the other hand, it required schools whose applications were approved to notify parents in writing and before the end of the current school year of the new increase in tuition fees. The violating schools face penalties which include suspension and license cancellation. Earlier, the Council of Ministers asked the Ministry of Education to revise the tuition fees levied by private and foreign schools.
