Many thanks go out for the time and effort it took to collect 77 pounds of acorns and nuts that Chick Szymanski brought over last week! Our squirrels are doing flips for this bonus of goodies! It is really important that the young squirrels learn how to recognize the natural foods that they will be finding, storing, and eating once they have been released and are on their own. This ensures their survival, and is a critical step in their pre-release conditioning and training on how to be a wild squirrel. Most is instinct, but we have to supply the items they need to practice those skills, and watch to make sure they are finishing their development completely before we start opening their doors to the wild. This cold weather is holding back the latest set - once the nights are more reasonable, well begin opening the doors to Cage J and letting them start to explore the woods. Our last indoor set is just about finished taking formula, so they can be moved outside to Cage P, hopefully by next weekend, if the weather cooperates.
