Many thanks to Kimkit for an excellent review of Casa Velha on Tripadvisor: “A welcome haven in Maderia” After a long trip to get here (high winds prevented us landing on Maderia) we were grateful to arrive and be met with such a warm welcome. We were shown the hotel and grounds and then our room which was lovely. A wlecoming bottle of water and wine were there to greet us as well. The food was wonderful. The daily set menu was delicious with enough choice to get what each of us wanted. All was beautifully presented. Breakfast had lots of choice (cereal, bread, pastries, cold meats, chees, hot food and fresh fruit) and was constantly refreshed. Eggs were served upon request and I really enjoyed my scrambled egg on toast. They also made tea in the English fashion and was worth every cent we paid for it. Served in a teapot with large cups with many types of tea available - a delight we came back to the hotel for frequently. Service was also of the highest standard. The staff were there when you wanted them and always very helpful and polite. The road up to the hotel was twisty but manageable. The hotel provided a minibus that went down to Funchal to the harbour and back twice a day which was extremely useful and saved driving around and parking in Funchal. The adjoining gardens were lovely as was the teahouse (did I say I liked the tea here - cakes were scrumptious as well). There were noisy frogs in the lily pond that squeaked if you startled them. We really enjoyed our stay here and will be back in the future. Room Tip: Room 4 was over the kitchens but I dint find that a problem. Casa Velha do Palheiro on Tripadvisor: bit.ly/13YyWzG
