Many think of Aspen as tall straight trees that need a lot of water. Not so in many cases. I have some growing from root cuttings I’ve taken from on top of the Continental Divide near Elk Park, Montana that were growing out of almost solid rock on a steep northwest facing slope nowhere near wet soil. They are stunted & grow very erratically due to the severe growing conditions. Many are almost growing horizontally as they are covered with several feet of heavy snow for up to 6 months a year since they first sprouted from their mothers root. I recently got some cuttings from an even more severe & harsh location. The ones in these photos I took in Glacier Park last week on the dry east side of the park. Yes they are Aspen but you can see they don’t look like tall straight growing ones. This particular grove is in a severe windy area that probably receives way more than 10’ to 15’ feet of annual snowfall. They are beautiful in their own unique way. Click on each photo for a great view.
