Many times Ive created amazing, wonderful, delicious dishes and posted the recipe here on Facebook. I usually get a lot of comments about how delicious they sound and how people wish they could have a bite, but Im guessing that no one has EVER actually followed one of my creations and made it for themselves. Well, this time, if you dont print this one out and take it with you to the supermarket and buy the ingredients and go home and make this, then you lose the privilege of calling yourself the human of the house. Because if you dont do this, then you are competing with the cat for being the friendliest, softest, most loving member of the family who CANT READ and WOULDNT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS if it could read. So there! OK. What are we making and how is it done? Well, we are making the worlds best baked beans, EVER. Preparation time: 6 hours. Heres how: Ingredients ---------------------------------------- 1 pound bag of 15 bean soup (dried beans). 1/2 of a large, yellow onion 15 oz. can of diced tomatoes (with green chilies) 6 Morning Star meatless sausage patties 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 c. molasses 1/4 c. packed brown sugar First, remove the seasoning packet from the bean soup package and set it aside for later. Rinse and sort the beans to remove foreign particles. Soak the beans overnight. Drain the beans and rinse to remove leached starch. Put beans in a slow cooker crock pot and cover with water. Set slow cooker temp to high. Cook for three hours. Set the six sausage patties out to thaw. Drain and SAVE the water. There will probably be between 1 to 2 cups. Put beans into a large mixing bowl (the larger, the better.) Chop / dice 1/2 of a large, yellow onion. (Approx. 1 cup). Chop / dice the six vegetarian sausage patties. Combine the saved bean liquid, onion, sausage, can of diced tomatoes, the bean soup seasoning package you set aside, and 1/2 tsp salt and bring to a starting boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Drain liquid AND SAVE IT AGAIN. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Add onion-sausage-tomatoes to the beans in the mixing bowl and mix thoroughly. Add 1/2 c molasses and 1/4 c packed brown sugar to the beans and mix thoroughly. Add a small amount of the saved liquid. You want the beans juicy, not swimming in liquid. Put beans into an oven-safe dutch oven or casserole dish and cover. Set the remaining liquid aside in the refrigerator for another day. It has become the most incredible soup base youve ever had at your fingertips. Or use it to make rice. Just cook with it. Youll love it! Bake for 2 1/2 hours. ------------------------------------------------------------------- There, youve just made baked beans that are way better than made with real sausage, better than Bushs, better than restaurant-made, even better than made by Paula Dean. And, youve got that amazing left-over soup base, which is worth the time and effort all by itself!
