Many times when I teach my favorites (Nigerian economy and macroeconomics), I have tried to preach Nigerian unity by placing emphasis on the fact that a nation cannot totally rely on natural resources whose demand are subject to the whims of the global market. I have insisted that oil should not be a reason why some people will desire that Nigeria be split. I am eager to return to class this semester (and that will be Monday next week) with evidence of the declining crude prices and the concomitant nosedive in the countrys revenue profile to further impress on my students (our future leaders) the need to diversify our economy...and more importantly, to remain united. Global crude oil market is threatened by research on alternative energy sources. Only a fool will fail to see that those who ask for Nigerias balkanization because they want to corner their oyel are planning their Waterloo. How much will oil fetch when cars start running on batteries and solar power? When factories run on fossil fuel or some other energy sources?
