Many years ago, I was booked to play in some fancy hotel in Mexico City. Id never been to Mexico. I dont speak Spanish. When the plane landed, I got a cab to take me to the hotel. I noticed soldiers with powerful looking guns leaning against building walls along the way. We passed an American Express office, and then a block or so later, we were at the hotel. When I went in, there were more soldiers with the big guns in the lobby. When I went to the desk to check in, I asked where the US Embassy was. The man said there was no US Embassy in Mexico. As soon as the bellboy took me to my room, I grabbed my suit case, took the stairway down, ran through the kitchen, threw my bag over a short wall, climbed it and went to the American Express office. They arranged for me to catch the next plane out, and for a cab to take me to the airport. I didnt play Mexico City, and I have never crossed the border to that country since.
