Many years ago, Shlomo Carlebach, who created a lot of the music we use in our Jewish congregations here in Austin, and all over America, was on his way down to Austin to perform, when he suddenly died in the airport. I remember this, as we were awaiting his arrival. I was younger then, and never had heard of him prior to the time we, as a community here, were waiting for him. Now, there is a new production in New York, which depicts his life. His character is being played by a non Jew, who has had to learn a great deal to portray him authentically. It is an interesting story whether or not you have heard of him before. He was known as the hippie Rabbi, who started out in San Francisco in the hippie era, and became welcoming of everyone.
