Many years ago my husband and I were on our way to DC. It was at night, a car past us and the car in front of us on a mountainous road in Nelson county. He was going way over the speed limit. The cars tail lights disappeared. The car in front of us had pulled further ahead of us as we slowed down. It looked like it suddenly stopped and then that cars tail lights disappeared too. We pulled off to the side of the road. Joe turned on the emergency blinkers and he got out of the car to see what happened. The road was gone. We called out and no one called back, we did not hear any noise coming from below us. We had no idea how many cars may have drive off the mountain. We put out some flares and stopped on coming cars. The south bound lane was still intact and they was a large medium strip between the two lanes. I dont recall a whole lot more about what happened next. There were no cell phones back them and some how someone contacted the police. We did continue on to DC. On the way back we could see the part of the road that had collapsed.
