Many years ago when I was working as a freelance feature writer for the (now-defunct) Journal newspapers, my editor asked me to write a couple of fashion stories. I wasnt what youd call a natural but one of my favorite assignments was interviewing Oscar de la Renta who had come to DC with his spring collection to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This afternoon I found the story in my files (titled, appropriately, Gracefully Elegant) which ran on December 7 1993. Heres what I wrote about him: What makes de la Renta so charming is his down-to-earth manner of putting people at ease. He smiles, he flirts, his gestures are fluid motions that reinforce his words. But mostly he listens to what lies between the lines in a conversation before he phrases his response. He has answered the same questions a million times, but he makes it seem as though he is revealing his thoughts for the first time. And my favorite line: Clothes become fashion only when a woman wears them. I have never forgotten that interview and how he had as much time for an inexperienced reporter as if I had been from Vogue. A very classy man.
