For a complete list of events send an email to: loucfields@gmail. March 9: Matthew Henson, a native of Charles County, MD passed on this day in 1955. He was one of the first men to reach the North Pole. His descendants still reside in Greenland. Henson was born on August 8, 1866. He was the first African American Arctic explorer, an associate of Robert Peary on seven voyages over a period of nearly twenty-three years. Henson served as a navigator and craftsman, traded with Inuit and learned their language, and was known as Pearys first man for these arduous travels. Mar 8: Clarence Mitchell, Jr. was born in Baltimore on this date in 1911. Mitchell was a civil rights advocate and leader. He served as the chief lobbyist for the Washington DC branch of the NAACP for 30 years. Nicknamed the 101st Senator, Mitchell waged a tireless campaign on Capitol Hill to help secure the passage of the Civil Rights Bills in 1957, 1960, 1964, 1965 and the Fair Housing Act in 1968. In 1970, his brother Parren Mitchell became the first Black person to represent Maryland in the US Congress. Mitchells sons, grandsons and nephews have all served in elected office. Presently, Keiffer Mitchell serves in the MD House of Delegates. His grandson C4 can be heard daily on WBAL-1090AM.
