Mar 17 1190 Rioting against the Jews of York, England, breaks out. The populace is stirred up by crusaders and aristocrats. The Jews flee into the town’s castle. The armed crowd besieges the castle for six days. On the eve of March 16 the more courageous Jews commit suicide. The 500 survivors, who open the gates on March 17 in order to accept baptism, are all massacred by the rioters. Thus the Jewish community of York is annihilated.
