Mar 9 Roundtable 10:30 am in the Library Prof. William I. Hargrove, Director, Center for Environmental Resource Mgmt at UTEP Experiences from Kenya and Indonesia Over the past 10 years, I have worked in Maai Mahiu, Kenya with an NGO based in Austin, TX, Comfort the Children International (CTC). This NGO got its start working with orphans but then developed program for mothers with disabled children, and then to women impacted by HIV AIDS. Most recently we have worked on developing community gardens especially for women to demonstrate sustainable food production systems based on composting, simple irrigation systems, mulching, and other easy to implement practices. In Indonesia, our project is aimed at conservation of the tropical rainforest in East Kalimantan, Borneo. We have been working with farm families who live in the forest margin to develop sustainable livelihoods that protect and conserve the forest. Last month we conducted a number of training activities on bee-keeping and honey production, production of herbal teas from medicinal plants, and production of cosmetic products from natural plant materials. We also did a water treatment demonstration that would provide cheap effective water treatment at the household level. Future activities will focus on alternative fuels to wood, which is still a primary source of fuel for cooking and a major contributor to greenhouse gas production.
