Maragret Bourke-White (1904 - 1971) Progressive; the first female journalistic correspondent/photographer in war zones, the first western photographer in the Soviet industry and the first female photographer for Life Magazine (she shot the cover for the first edition). She pushed the boundaries. Mainly focuses on industrial and architectural photography she started her own studio in Cleveland in the 1930’s. She started photographing at Otis Steel company which gave her national attention due to the high quality of her pictures by using Magnesium Flare technique that lit up the scenes she shot. In1929 she started working for Fortune Magazine for which she photographed the soviet industrial scene. In 1936 she went on to life magazine where her cover of the Fort Pack Dam appeared. Bourke-White was not only unique as a female in a male dominated scene, she was also unique because of her passion in capturing the contemporary society. Regarded as the eye of time, she went to extremes for her photography. She would balance on the edge of the Chrysler Building and face German torpedo’s and bombers. Nothing could stand in her way of taking the right photograph! At the moment, the Haags Fotomuseum is showing a retrospective of Margaret Bourke-White.
