Marathon Training Week three, day two Saturday morning at - TopicsExpress

Marathon Training Week three, day two Saturday morning at breakfast we were talking about training schedules and missing workouts, and it seemed like most of my co-mentors and alumni agreed that missing a weekday run even semi-regularly wasn’t a big deal, because our schedules keep us very well trained and it’s the long runs that are most important. I actually thought I was going to have a panic attack at the thought of regularly missing a workout! Yeah, I’m a perfectionist. I know that about myself (and really, would you hire a lawyer who wasn’t a stickler for rules and details?) But I think more than that, I view the schedule as some sort of talisman: as long as I do exactly what it says, I’ll be able to finish my race. If I don’t, then who knows what might happen? Of course I’ve never made every single workout. My knees bother me; I have a chest cold; I’m out of town or have family plans or just have a day where I don’t wanna run. Today, my schedule says two miles. My personal plan was to run four miles before work and then go to abs class at lunch. Except that yesterday I did something very minor to my back, and when I woke up this morning it really hurt. So no pre-work run and no abs class (I didn’t think I could get up and down from the mat!). I did do 20 minutes, which equals 2 miles, in the pool at lunch but I may still try to do two more after work. I just have to keep reminding myself: the training plan is not magic, it’s just a plan. And if I follow that plan at the expense of listening to my body, that’s when I’ll really be in trouble!
