March 12, 2014: Day 8, Wed of the First Week of Lent Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jonah 3:1-10 --- Prudence -- Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed. The citys ruler acted immediately when this prophecy reached him. He left his throne and began to repent. Having listened and reasoned, he acted in a way that was not only for his own sake, but for the sake of his subjects as well. In this way he exercised the virtue of prudence. Prudence is that cardinal virtue that allows us to reason correctly and then act in accordance with right reason. It is prudence that immediately guides the judgement of conscience. The prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with his judgement (CCC1806). The prudence of the king of Nineveh reminds us that we need not only to consider carefully the message of repentance, but to act in a way that is consistent with that consideration. Lord, make me prudent in my every thought and deed, and committed to repentance.
